Fire investigators believe a cigarette in a planter box started a blaze that damaged a Lacey home Friday afternoon.
A neighbor reported the fire after seeing smoke coming from the back of a house on the 900 block of Bowker St. SE. Neighbors used a garden hose to stop the flames from spreading until fire crews arrived.
The fire started on the back porch and spread to part of the house. It was extinguished within 10 minutes, causing $15,000 in damage.
The residents were not home at the time of the fire. Firefighters found and rescued two dogs from inside the house.
Three engines, two medic units and a battalion chief responded to the fire with assistance from the Olympia Fire Department.
