St. Leo Food Connection has resumed its weekend food backpacks for Tacoma students who are at risk of going hungry when school lets out.
This is the fifth year of operation for the program. This year, it will serve an estimated 420 students each week in 14 Tacoma Public Schools.
This month, the program will also expand to two schools in Lakewood’s Clover Park School District.
The backpacks are sent home with kids every Friday during the school year. Each is packed with six kid-friendly meals and snacks, including fresh fruits and vegetables.
St. Leo is partnering with local schools and organizations to collect food and monetary donations.
