 • Enjoy the works of local artists at the Nativity House Art Show today from 5-8 p.m. The Nativity House is at 2304 S. Jefferson Ave., Tacoma.

 • School has started and you might want to attend the Meet Tacoma School District’s New Deputy Superintendent presentation at 6:30 tonight. It’s being held at King’s Books, 218 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma. 253-272-8801, kingsbookstore.com/event/schoolsSept.

    Poetry and history events often are free in our community, but three weekend events stand out.

  • Poetry contest tonight at Richland Library

    Eight students from four high schools will recite classical and contemporary poetry at the Southeastern Washington Poetry Out Loud contest.

    The free event begins at 6 p.m. today in the Doris Roberts Gallery at the Richland Public Library, 955 Northgate Drive.

    To eliminate financial barriers to gaining early college credits, Tacoma Public Schools began a new policy this year that allows high school students to take Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams for free.
