THURSday’s highlights

Kate Frame’s 35-yard shot proved to be the winner, and Gig Harbor remained unbeaten in Narrows 4A with a 2-0 girls soccer victory over visiting Olympia. Celia Vaughn added an insurance goal in the second half.

Jennifer Oak’s goal in the 72nd minute completed a Kentwood comeback, and the Conquerors defeated Kentlake, 2-1.

Avery Smalls registered her first hat trick of the season, and Danielle Rhea and Rebecca Simansky shared the shutout in goal as Wilson defeated Lincoln, 6-0.

A night after being beaten by Black Hills, defending 4A girls volleyball champion Olympia was pushed to the limit at South Kitsap before prevailing, 23-25, 25-13, 26-24, 26-28, 15-13.

Led by Margaux Arnston’s 12 kills, Annie Wright swept host Stadium in three games, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23).

Foss won seven events and posted four state-qualifying marks, but visiting North Thurston’s depth prevailed in an early-season Narrows 3A girls swimming showdown, 115-68, in Tacoma. Foss’ Emma Chard posted two of those qualifying times as medalist in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 13.47 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.54).

    On Rachael Tengbom's last trip to Kenya, she met a Maasai girl about the same age as her daughters.

    But unlike Tengbom's teenagers, who are busy with school and activities, the 14-year-old Maasai girl was busy raising the three young children she's borne since being married at age 9.

    Tengbom, a native of the Maasai tribe who now lives in Kennewick, has worked for several years trying to change the way girls and women are treated in Maasai culture through her nonprofit organization called Voices of Hope. In particular, the group is working to end the practice of female genital mutilation, also known as female circumcision, which involves young girls' genitals being altered or removed for no medical reason.

  • Feb. 1 deadline for women's hall of fame nominations

    Nominations of women who have made outstanding contributions to the community are due to the YWCA Northwest Women's Hall of Fame by Friday, Feb. 1.

    Nominees must be Whatcom County residents, living or deceased; made a lasting community contribution; served as role models or promoted opportunities for women and girls; and demonstrated perseverance and vision, the YWCA said. They should have overcome obstacles to fulfill their goals.
