On the Road: Car is King Weekend
What: It’s all about cars as the Maryhill Museum of Art celebrates “Car is King Weekend.” There will be vintage cars, the chance to drive one of the first paved roads in the Northwest and the chance for kids to build a car out of vegetables.
When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 6 and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 7
Where: Maryhill Museum of Art, Goldendale
Drive the road: From noon-2 p.m. on Oct. 6, the public will have the chance to drive Maryhill Loops Road. In honor of museum founder Sam Hill, the historic road will be opened for automobiles. The public can take a spin down this byway – one of the first modern roads in the Northwest. The drive features beautiful scenery and eight hairpin curves.
Concours de Maryhill: From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 6, the museum’s east lawn is transformed into a car show feauring dozens of classic, sport and customized cars. The vehicles will be competing for prizes such as best original, classic, hot rod and muscle car. This is an open car show and anyone with a special car can enter. The day concludes with the presentation of the car show awards. Organized by the Goldendale Motorsports Association.
Veggie car races: From 1-3 p.m. Oct., 6, children can put their ingenuity to work transforming simple vegetables into cars and race them on a 12-foot ramp. Kids of all ages are invited to participate.
Maryhill Loops hill climb: From 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 7, vintage sports cars from the 1930s-1960s race singly in a three-mile timed race up the historic Maryhill Loops Road. Spectators can view the hill climb race from the Highway 97 overlook and from designated viewpoints along the race route. Organized by the Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts of Seattle. Only approved cars and drivers will be competing.
Cost: Free once you’ve paid to enter the museum grounds.
