New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has a torn ACL in his left knee and will undergo surgery in the near future.
Revis was hurt during Sunday's game against Miami and will likely be lost for the remainder of the season. Jets head coach Rex Ryan made the announcement Monday.
"Certainly, it's a big disappointment," said Ryan. "But again, I know the way Darrelle is. This is a guy that's as competitive as it gets. He's going to come back strong from it."
Ryan wouldn't go as far as saying Revis would be out for the season, but surgery for a torn ACL usually requires a recovery period of at least 6-to-9 months.
"I want to sit down and talk to Darrelle and we'll do that before we decide if he's on IR," Ryan added.
Revis suffered the injury while trying to stop in an effort to make a tackle on Miami's Daniel Thomas after a reception. He was not involved in any contact and immediately grabbed at his left knee before falling to the turf.
Jets medical personnel tended to Revis before he got up and limped off the field.
Revis was back in the lineup on Sunday after sitting out last week's game at Pittsburgh because of a mild concussion. He recovered a fumble during Sunday's game before exiting, helping the Jets to a 23-20 overtime victory.
