The Washington State Patrol trooper who shot a man in the wrist early Saturday after a high-speed pursuit that ended in Tacoma has worked for the department for four years.

Trooper Sean Chatterton is on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated, which is standard procedure after a police shooting.

Chatterton was hired as a cadet in 2008 and commissioned as a trooper in 2010.

The chase started early Saturday near the King County line and ended on state Route 16 in Tacoma. Troopers said the driver, a 26-year-old Puyallup man, was being pulled over for driving erratically and traveling up to 130 mph.

After the driver crashed on Interstate 5 near Bay Street, he allegedly rammed the trooper’s patrol car. Chatterton fired at the man, hitting him in the wrist.

The man then took off again, eventually losing control and hitting a barrier at the on-ramp. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
