Pierce County unemployment headed in the wrong direction in August, jumping to 9.4 percent last month from a revised 8.8 percent jobless rate in July, according to data released Tuesday by the state Employment Security Department.
Seasonally-adjusted statewide unemployment also was higher last month, rising to 8.6 percent from 8.5 percent in July, the data show.
It's not all bad: the Pierce County jobless rate was 10 percent in August 2011.
Regional jobless rates for August, not seasonally adjusted:
-King County (Seattle, Bellevue): 7.6 percent.
-Kitsap County: 7.7 percent.
-Thurston County: 8.2 percent.
-Pierce County: 9.4 percent.
-Mason County: 10.9 percent.
-Lewis County: 12.8 percent.
-Grays Harbor County: 12.8 percent.
