Chain update: Puyallup's South Hill gets another Red Robin and a BJ's Brewhouse

Puyallup’s South Hill is home to chain restaurants that seem to multiply like Tribbles. Red Robin will now join The Ram and Applebee’s in duplicating itself there. The gourmet burger chain that was founded in the Northwest has applied for a liquor permit for a restaurant at 16904 Meridian Ave. E., Puyallup (that location appears to be near Kohl’s). A company spokeswoman confirmed via email that the restaurant will be a second South Hill location and that the Red Robin near South Hill Mall will remain open. The new Red Robin is expected to open in the spring.

  • Finally opening in Puyallup - El Toro Mexican Restaurant on Canyon

For years, a sign just off Canyon Road in Puyallup advertised the future home of El Toro, a chain of Mexican restaurants operating in the South Sound since 1979. Years passed, there was no activity, no construction at the site. Just that weathered sign. Ruben Arias Jr. whose father Ruben Arias Sr. founded the chain, said he’s received so many emails and calls about that sign, he can’t respond to them all. They ask the same thing - are you ever going to open?

  • Now open in Puyallup – Epic Donuts

It’s been a long wait for South Hill diners, but Epic Donuts has finally opened. South Hill is a community short on doughnut options aside from grocery store bakeries. This bakery will cater to kids – a pretty safe bet in a suburban community like South Hill – with its Epic Eddie mascot and specials aimed at schools and youth sports teams.

  • Gyros invasion: Greek restaurants becoming a lot easier to find around Tacoma

Gyros come, gyros go. We've seen that happen a lot the last year. Recent restaurant closures include Zara Mediterranean and University Gyros, both in downtown Tacoma, My Greek in Puyallup's South Hill last July, and the closure several months ago of Gyros Place. It seemed as if the closures would drastically reduce our access to gyros, souvlaki and falafal (the horror!). Lucky for diners, when one gyros door closes here, another seems to open. Here's a report about the recent moves and upcoming openings of four Greek restaurants:

  • Carlie Holland is a leader in the pool for the Puyallup Vikings

Puyallup Vikings girls water polo team captain Carlie Holland said her team hasn't specifically discussed its goals for the 2013 season but yet they all know what they want to achieve. Last season the Vikings advanced to the state tournament and didn't place.

Holland said a repeat of 2012 is unacceptable.

"We did not perform well last year when it counted," Holland said of the state competition. "We certainly want to place better than we did last year. It's not necessarily about getting a certain place, its all about improving from last year's showing.

  • Mod Pizza opening in Puyallup and Tacoma

A Seattle-based pizza chain is opening its first South Sound outposts in Puyallup and Tacoma. Expect a late June opening for Mod Super Fast Pizza in Puyallup’s Sunrise Village. A Tacoma Mall Mod is expected to open sometime in September.
