THE COLLEGES: five things to watch

LSU still needs a quarterback

Washington never forced Tigers quarterback Zach Mettenberger to throw during its 41-3 thumping in Baton Rouge. Auburn did last weekend, and the results weren’t pretty. Mettenberger threw for 169 yards on 15-of-27 accuracy. That won’t be good enough against most of the SEC.

Getting back to football

After all the despicable occurrences around the Penn State program, the Nittany Lions (2-2) have won two consecutive games. Granted, wins over Navy and Temple aren’t cause for wild celebration, but they still represent progress for the tattered program.

Pressure on Mike Leach?

Washington State fans started the season with high hopes predicated on the hiring of Mike Leach as coach, though there was little turnover on the roster. If Oregon shows up in Seattle and blasts the Cougars, how much grumbling will be directed toward Leach?

Alabama still dominant

“Just some days, you know, things aren’t going to go your way. You’ve got to fight through adversity, and that’s what we did,” Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron said last week. Right. Such drama. Alabama beat Florida Atlantic, 40-7. The Tide has allowed three TDs and scored 20.

What’s next for Heinicke?

Who? Taylor Heinicke, that’s who. Old Dominion’s quarterback, right, set the NCAA Division I record by passing for 730 yards in a 66-61 win over New Hampshire last week. He was 55-for-79, and he threw for 480 yards in the second half alone.
