Tacoma bankruptcy attorney Mike Malaier had a chance to identify the Snake River as the border between Idaho from Oregon but named the Columbia River instead, and it went downhill from there.
After winning $8,100 the previous day on “Jeopardy,” Malaier’s run ended Thursday night when he went $2,800 into the red.
Malaier got off to a slow start with only a couple of correct questions before the first commercial break.
In the second segment, Trebek introduced Malaier with, “He’s from Tacoma, Washington, not Washington, D.C.”
Malaier correctly answered a question on perfume but confused rocket scientist Wernher Von Braun with nuclear physicist Edward Teller, sending him $400 into the red.
By the end of the show, Malaier was ineligible for the final question. Trebek sent him home with $1,000 and Wednesday’s earnings.
