More than 30 law enforcement officers will patrol Tacoma bars tonight in hopes of reducing the number of drunken driving incidents.
Pierce County’s Target Zero team will focus on establishments in North End Tacoma and along Sixth Avenue, starting at 9 p.m.
Those arrested on suspicion of drunken driving will be brought to a 36-foot motor home to be tested for alcohol and placed in a holding cell if found to be inebriated.
In conjunction with the team, family members who have lost a loved one in a drunken driving crash will visit bars with state Liquor Control Board officials and other law enforcement officers to raise awareness among bartenders and servers about over-serving patrons.
The Target Zero team has arrested more than 2,500 impaired drivers since July 2010 and estimates it has saved 21 lives and reduced DUI fatalities by 30 percent, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force.stacia.glenn@ thenewstribune.com
