If he’s lucky, Curtis High wide receiver Carter McKay won’t have to pay for Friday night’s performance with a laundry list of chores at home.

After all, he was a thorn in his father’s side all night long.

The senior receiver caught four passes for 79 yards — including a pivotal first-half touchdown — as the Vikings blew out the Todd Beamer Titans, coached by his father Darren, 49-0, at Viking Stadium in University Place in an SPSL South game.

“I’m not going to give him a hard time,” the younger McKay said of his father, who’s in his first season coaching the Titans. “Hopefully I won’t have to do dishes.”

McKay’s 15-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Scott Wismer with 54 seconds to go in the first half turned a 14-0 lead into 21-0. Curtis’ Beau Olson recovered a blocked punt at the Beamer 15-yard line to set up the play.

McKay played for his father last year at Gig Harbor, but opted to attend Curtis this year before his dad accepted the job at Beamer.

“It was different,” Carter said of playing against his father for the first time. “Usually I’m on that sideline with them. Today was the first time I’ve ever been nervous for a football game — probably since seventh-grade. It was different but it was fun.”

In the second half, the Vikings’ Jason Williams took the opening kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown to fuel the rout. Halfback EJ Deveaux scored on a 1-yard run on the next drive, pushing the lead to 35-0 with 7:48 remaining in the third as the Vikings won their third straight game after a Sept. 7 loss at home to Graham-Kapowsin.

“As a parent, I’m obviously very proud,” Darren McKay said of his son’s performance. “As a coach, I’m on the opposite end. (I’m) proud of how hard he played on both sides of the football. … Even as an opposing coach, it was something that you would have to admire.”

Deveaux rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, and Wismer threw for 161 yards, completing 10 of 13 passes. He also rushed for touchdown. Perhaps the real star was Curtis’ defense. The Vikings came into the game having allowed 58 points in four games, and were dominant again Friday night.

Beamer (1-4) couldn’t ignite its run game, and starting quarterback Anthony Allen was replaced midway through the second quarter by backup Taylor Davis. Davis led the Titans to their only first down of the first half, connecting with Caleb Waller on a 13-yard pass play late in the half. Curtis (4-1) held the Titans to just 18 yards of total offense in the first half.

“They beat us in all three phases,” Darren McKay said. “They were much more physical than us on both sides of the ball — especially on defense. That’s about being in the weight room. You have to tip your hat to that other team. They took the game to us from the very beginning.”
