LOGGERS GAMEDAY
LEWIS & CLARK (3-0) AT PUGET SOUND (0-3)
1 p.m. (PDT), Baker Stadium, Tacoma
Radio: None.
The Series: UPS leads, 22-12, but Lewis & Clark has won the past three meetings, including 31-28 last season in Portland. The schools set a conference record for combined scoring in Lewis & Clark’s 68-64 win in 2010. The Loggers’ last triumph in the series was 58-14 in 2008.
What to watch: WR Adam Kniffin got the last of the major UPS receiving records last week – career yardage (he had 67 yards Saturday against Whittier and has 2,326 yards in his career). Yet, he and any of the Loggers, including coach Jeff Thomas, would sacrifice all of the yardage for a win to snap the team’s current 13-game skid. When QB Braden Foley (74-for-137, 993 yards, seven TDs, seven INT, sacked nine times) isn’t forcing high-risk passes, the Loggers usually have no issues moving the ball – especially now that RB Kupono Park (115 yards against Whittier, his first career 100-yard game) is running hard and effectively inside. The Pioneers pretty much go as QB Keith Welch (58-for-92, 766 yards, six TDs, zero INTs) goes. Always a dual threat, the reigning NWC offensive player of the year has greatly improved his passing efficiency this season.
What’s at stake: It is the start of conference play, and 1-0 would certainly look better than another loss. Just a hunch – the Loggers play their best all-around game.
TNT pick: UPS, 48-45.
