The Denver Broncos placed safety Quinton Carter, a rookie starter during the team's unexpected run to a 2011 AFC West title, on injured reserve Saturday.

A fourth-round selection in last year's draft, Carter started 10 regular- season games as well as both of the club's playoff contests during his rookie campaign and recorded a pair of interceptions during the postseason. The 24- year-old had been relegated to a reserve role this season, however, in part due to a knee injury that required surgery during training camp.

Carter re-injured the same knee during Sunday's 31-25 loss to Houston. He had compiled a pair of special-teams tackles over the first three weeks.

The Oklahoma product finished his rookie year with 56 tackles and one sack while appearing in all 16 regular-season tests.

Denver also promoted linebacker Mike Mohamed and safety Duke Ihenacho from the practice squad to the active roster. Mohamed was a sixth-round choice of the Broncos in the 2011 draft who played in two games last season, while Ihenacho is an undrafted rookie out of San Jose State.
