Tre’Shaun Lexing, the talented wing from Lincoln High School, gave an oral commitment to play basketball for the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday afternoon.
The 6-foot-6, 195-pound player chose Colorado over Washington State and Arizona State. He was on his official visit when he informed Buffaloes coach Tad Boyle of his pledge – becoming the school’s third commitment of the 2012 recruiting class.
Lexing also becomes the Abes’ first full-ride NCAA Division I basketball commitment since Justin Holt in 2002.
“We were trying to get him to be more cautious about this. I said, ‘Don’t commit until you know in your heart it is the best place for you,’” Abes coach Aubrey Shelton said.
“He obviously felt that way. He really loves the place. He loves the coaching staff. And he fit incredibly well with the team.”
Lexing, a News Tribune 2011-12 All-Area first team selection after averaging 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists per game last season as a junior, had offers from his finalists, as well as Gonzaga, Boise State and Santa Clara.
Colorado got in the picture early last summer when Lexing toured with elite “Team Bradley” of the Northwest Panthers in the AAU circuit.
By late August, Colorado has become Lexing’s favorite school, Shelton said.
“They are really deep, and have a lot of guys who are 6-5 to 6-7 who play,” Shelton said.
Lexing visited WSU (Sept. 7-9) and ASU (Sept. 21-22) before taking off for Colorado on Thursday. He returned to Tacoma on Saturday night.
The reigning Narrows 3A co-MVP joins shooting guard Jaron Hopkins, out of Mesa, Ariz., and power forward Dustin Thomas, out of Texarkana, Texas, as members of this recruiting class for the Buffaloes.
