A longtime South Sound litigator will be Puyallup’s new municipal court judge.

Andrea Beall, a partner in the law firm Stewart Beall MacNichols & Harmell, starts Nov. 1. She replaces retiring Judge Stephen Shelton, who has presided for about 18 years.

The Puyallup City Council confirmed Beall’s appointment Tuesday.

Her annual salary will be roughly $134,600, a city spokeswoman said.

Beall will fill the rest of Shelton’s term, which runs through next year, and then will have to win election to keep the seat. She will be the first female to preside at the city’s municipal court, a city news release said.

She’s lived in the Puyallup area since 1999 and has served as a judge pro tem in Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Tacoma and Issaquah, the city said.

She’s a graduate of Seattle University’s law school.

Mayor Rick Hansen picked Beall from a pool of three finalists. A total of 14 people applied. A committee that included council members John Knutsen and Kent Boyle helped with the selection process.

“I am honored that Mayor Hansen and the committee selected me,” Beall said in the city news release issued in advance of the confirmation vote. “I look forward to serving the City of Puyallup and becoming a part of the fabric of this community.”
