No excuses for not fishing this weekend. Fish are biting in many locations “and the weather is definitely in their (anglers) favor,” said Bud Herlitzka of the Spanaway Park Boat House.
LAKES
American: Hoochie and dodger will give you the best chance of landing kokanee, but the action has been slow.
Kapowsin: Largemouth bass are biting on white spinnerbait.
Spanaway: Herlitzka says the browns have moved north to the boat house, and if you want to catch them try trolling with flatfish and worms. Still-fishing for rainbows is still good at the south end of the lake. Power Bait seems to be working best, Herlitzka said.
Spencer: Perch and rainbows are biting.
Washington: Bass and perch are biting.
SALT WATER
South Sound: Zittel’s Johnson Point Marina reports action is mostly slow, but some have had luck near Squaxin Island.
Strait of Juan de Fuca: Salmon anglers are still having success, according to state checks. Fishing reports are favorable at Sekiu.
Tacoma: The staff at the Point Defiance Boathouse Marina reports anglers are catching fish, but the water has been rough and many people are staying off the water. Try going deep with flasher and either hoochie, spoons or herring to catch coho or blackmouth.
Clamming: The fall’s first razor clam dig is scheduled to start Oct. 13 at four ocean beaches if marine toxin tests show clams are safe to eat.
The proposed dates: Oct. 13 (low tide is at 5:41 p.m.) and Oct. 14 (6:26) at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis and Mocrocks; Oct. 15 (7:11) at Long Beach and Twin Harbors; and Oct. 16 (7:57), Oct. 17 (8:44) and Oct. 18 (9:34) at Twin Harbors.
“Low tides will occur relatively late in the day, so diggers need be prepared for darkness during evening digs in the fall,” said Dan Ayres, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife coastal shellfish manager, in a prepared statement.
The department is accepting comments on future digs at wdfw.wa.gov through Oct. 9.
RIVERS
Columbia: Try the mouth of the White Salmon and Klickitat for chinook, coho and steelhead. Some anglers are having luck catching sturgeon in The Dalles Pool.
Cowlitz: Chinook, cutthroat trout and coho are all biting.
Green: There are coho to catch, but they aren’t eager to bite. Try spinners and spoons.
Lewis: Steelhead, chinook and coho are all biting.
Nisqually: Orange corkies and yarn will give anglers a good chance at coho and chinook.
Puyallup: Corkies and yarn seem to be attracting coho.
Tilton: Chinook and coho are biting.
