EUGENE, Ore - Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins made a big play, then had a big problem.
Seferian-Jenkins caught a play-action pass for 28 yards with 3 minutes, 25 seconds remaining in the second quarter, then was pulled down from behind. He tried to power out of Ifo Ekpre-Olomu’s tackle while the Oregon corner was hanging on to his lower legs.
Seferian-Jenkins was slow to get up, then came to the sidelines where he was surrounded by trainers. He jogged lightly and with a pronounced limp before being sent to the stationary exercise bike. He did not participate in the rest of the drive or Washington’s next possession. He struggled to jog off the field at the half.
Seferian-Jenkins came back out for the second half still in full uniform, but did not go back into the game. He hobbled around the sideline with his left ankle heavily taped.He’s second on the team in receptions with 24, trailing wide receiver Kasen Williams.
STILL THIN UP FRONT
Washington offensive lineman Ben Riva was listed as a possibility to start at right tackle on Monday’s depth chart, but he did not make the trip to Oregon. Riva fractured his forearm in the opener against San Diego State and has not played since. James Atoe started at right tackle instead, across from one of Oregon’s best defensive players, defensive end Dion Jordan.
The Huskies’ patchwork offensive line was sophomore Atoe, freshman Shane Brostek at right guard, senior Drew Schaefer at center, freshman Dexter Charles at left guard and sophomore Micah Hatchie at left tackle. Schaefer was the only member of the starting offensive line to play in Autzen Stadium prior to Saturday.
NOT GETTING EASIER
Washington hosts No. 13 USC, which won at Utah, 38-28, on Thursday, 4 p.m. next Saturday. A trip to Arizona follows prior to a visit from No. 14 Oregon State. Arizona scored 48 points at Stanford, but lost in overtime to the Cardinal on Saturday. The Beavers grounded out a 19-6 win at home against Washington State.
EXTRA POINTS
Defensive tackle Josh Perkins started the second half in place of Danny Shelton who was ineffective and has an injured right hand. Oregon ran straight up the middle several times in the first half. … True freshman linebacker Cory Littleton started Saturday, his first action for the Huskies. He was listed third on Monday’s depth chart at rush end, but was one of four linebackers to start, taking Josh Shirley off the field early. … Travis Coons again handled all kicking duties for Washington. … Former Duck LeGarrette Blount was at the game as an honorary captain.
