A 36-year-old motorcyclist died Monday night while speeding down a Lakewood street and popping wheelies, police said Tuesday.

A patrol officer spotted Matthew Swan about 6:40 p.m. traveling about 100 miles per hour, popping wheelies and weaving in and out of traffic, Lt. Chris Lawler said.

The officer turned around to try to pull the motorcyclist over, but he had crashed at Gravelly Lake Drive and Washington Boulevard before she caught up to him, Lawler said.

There was no pursuit, and police said Swan was killed after he lost control of his bike.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
