Eight South Sound schools will benefit from federal grants aimed at giving academic and enrichment opportunities to kids in high-need neighborhoods.
State education officials announced Tuesday that 12 educational and community groups in Washington will receive an estimated $4 million a year for five years. The grants are designed to create what will be known as 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which will offer help for students when school’s not in session.
The goal is to have students meet state standards in reading and math, and offer opportunities to participate in art, music and recreation.
Included in the grants are programs operated by the Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound and the Puget Sound Educational Service District (ESD), which provides support services to schools in Pierce and King counties.
The Boys and Girls Clubs will receive an initial grant of $494,815. They will operate at Stanley and Manitou Park elementary schools in Tacoma, Thompson Elementary School in the Bethel School District and Lakeview Elementary School in Lakewood.
The Puget Sound ESD programs, which will receive $500,000, will be at First Creek Middle School and Lister Elementary School in Tacoma and at Totem Middle School and Star Lake Elementary School in Federal Way.
