An Auburn woman found a bomb in the fuel hatch of her vehicle Wednesday when she stopped to gas up, police said.

Officers responded about 2:30 p.m. to a grocery store parking lot at Eighth Street Northeast and Auburn Way North, Cmdr. Mike Hirman said.

The woman called police when she saw what looked like a fuse and tape sticking out of the hatch.

The Federal Way police bomb squad deactivated the device, and officers finished securing the scene just before 5 p.m., Hirman said.

Investigators found black powder in the device, which Hirman said means it was an active explosive.

Police were investigating where the bomb came from. Hirman said officers were following leads, and that the incident “doesn’t appear to be random.”
