A 30-year-old man accused of dragging a Tacoma police officer during a traffic stop was arrested Thursday.
Pierce County sheriff’s deputies pulled over a vehicle driving without headlights in the 5300 block of East I Street and discovered the suspect was a passenger in the car. Although he man gave deputies a false name, they recognized him from a flyer distributed to law enforcement officers with the man’s photo.
He man was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault.
The original incident occurred late Monday in the 8200 block of East F Street.
Officer Bret Terwilliger recognized the man’s vehicle as being wanted in connection with a domestic violence warrant and pulled him over, police said. The man refused to obey commands and grabbed the officer. He began driving away, dragging Terwilliger beside the car, police said.
The officer fired his gun at the driver to free himself. It does not appear the driver was struck.
Terwilliger, 29, who has been with the department five years, was not hurt.
