The waiters at the Tacoma Mall Red Robin will be out of their element Saturday.

Officers from several law enforcement agencies, including the Fircrest and Tacoma police departments, will serve guests and collect tips for Special Olympics Washington from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., as part of tip-a-cop fundraisers at 32 Washington Red Robins.

Tacoma’s event raised about $6,000 last year, Fircrest police chief John Cheesman said.

The funds benefit about 10,000 adults and children with intellectual disabilities who train and compete as athletes in the program.

Law enforcement officers across the state raised about $600,000 last year at various fundraisers.

Other events included a June Krispy Kreme fundraiser, in which officers sit on the roofs of the doughnut shops for about 12 hours and reel money up from patrons with a fishing pole.

“That one’s brutal,” Cheesman said with a laugh.
