It’s easy to forget about Federal Way’s defense.
Credit that to the Eagles’ offense, which consistently piles up yards and averages 51 points a game.
A warning to future opponents, however: don’t sleep on Federal Way’s defense. It’s equally impressive.
The second-ranked Eagles got an interception return for a touchdown from Keenan Curran and another pick from D’Londo Tucker in the end zone to stymie a score as Federal Way remained undefeated by hammering Spanaway Lake, 42-13, in South Puget Sound South League 4A play Thursday at Memorial Stadium in Federal Way.
“Our defense gave us great field position in the first half and that was key,” Federal Way coach John Meagher said. “We knew Spanaway Lake was one of the top rushing teams in the league, and I thought we did a great job against them tonight.”
Sophomore Chico McClatcher continued to shine for the Eagles, rushing for 150 yards on nine carries with two scores, and hauling in a 78-yard TD pass from Evan Elliott in the closing seconds of the first half.
“He’s just a special player,” Meagher said of McClatcher. “Lightning in a bottle.”
Elliott threw a trio of first-half touchdown passes, connecting on scoring strikes with Mike Tate (1 yard) and Branden Warren (12) before hitting the speedy McClatcher out of the backfield to give Federal Way a commanding 42-0 lead.
The game clock ran freely from there, while the Eagles starters watched the second half from the sideline.
During the first five games, Federal Way (7-0) outscored opponents 243-55, and it was more of the same against the Sentinels (3-4).
