SEATTLE: Art project causes bomb scare near bridge

If art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, what does it mean when the bomb squad shows up?

If art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, what does it mean when the bomb squad shows up?

Seattle police said what started out as a college art project set up Monday under the Aurora Bridge led officers to block off streets and call in arson and bomb squad detectives. Boaters on nearby Lake Union were advised to stay well offshore.

Police spokeswoman Renee Witt said witnesses called police after watching two men set up a large wooden box with two red push-buttons, then leave. When a 29-year-old man came back to do more work, he found a full-scale bomb scare.

Witt said the man told police the box was an art project for a graduate course at the University of Washington. Police agreed the box was harmless and the man left, taking his art with him.

Witt said the men apparently didn’t think putting a big box under a bridge might scare some people.
