A Tacoma family will appear on TV game show “Family Feud” on Thursday, thanks to their naturally boisterous personalities.
“My family is very positive and enthusiastic and loud, so it kind of worked out. It was a natural thing for us,” Tralayne Myers said of her three brothers and father who competed on the show with her.
Myers, a customer-outreach coordinator for Sound Transit, joined her brother Arnold, a project coordinator for Nintendo; brother Charles, a St. Joseph’s hospital employee; brother Brandon, a salesman; and father Arnold, a retired music teacher at Mount Tahoma High School, for the taping in Atlanta.
She is a University Place resident. The rest of her family lives in Tacoma, where they grew up. The siblings are graduates of Wilson High School.
“Family Feud” is hosted by comedian Steve Harvey. Each episode has two families face off in front of a studio audience. The families can win up to $100,000 and a new car.
The family teams try to guess the top responses to survey questions polled from the public. The team that wins the game goes on to play the Fast Money round. If the family wins that round, it receives $20,000.
A family can compete for up to five days in a row and win $100,000. Any family that plays the full five days wins a new car. As with all game shows, the Myers family can’t reveal how they did on the show before it airs.
The family’s path to stardom began in January, when they auditioned for the show at South Hill Mall. Tralayne Myers said her family was one of 15 trying out that day.
“We had to show a lot of excitement,” she said. “They tell you your family is being judged on enthusiasm and energy.”
They heard they made the cut in late March and traveled to Atlanta in June. Still, they weren’t guaranteed a slot on the show.
“You still go through a rehearsal,” Tralayne Myers said. “From there they are still selecting. Not all of the families got on the show.”
Host Harvey is very approachable – and funny, she said.
“He’s very good at being an improv comedian,” she said. “He has fun being himself and being comical. That’s what made the show fun.”
Tralayne Myers was named after a character from the original “Star Trek” TV show, which apparently was a source of good-natured jokes for Harvey, she said.
Only one sibling, sister Jennifer Jefferson, wasn’t on the stage, but she and husband Chris live in Atlanta and attended the taping.
The experience was fun for her family and a chance to show off, Tralayne Myers said.
“We tend to think we’re a good family and it’s nice to display that,” she said. “Our parents have been married for 44 years and they still like each other.”
