A 35-year-old merchant marine sailor was arrested Monday night after he allegedly assaulted a Tacoma police officer.

Officers were called to the 5600 block of Marine View Drive about 9:30 p.m. to break up an argument between two men over prostitution rates, police said.

While the officer was trying to defuse the situation, the sailor chest-bumped the officer and continued to be combative after he forced to the ground, police said. The officer eventually used a Taser to control him, police said.

The sailor repeatedly bashed his head into the pavement after being handcuffed on the pavement, police said. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of several lacerations to his head.

The sailor reportedly just returned from six weeks at sea and was visiting friends and family in the area.
