THURSday’s highlights
Puyallup’s Vinnie Murphy shot a 5-under-par 67 to win the South Puget Sound League boys golf championship on the Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex on Thursday. Murphy’s two-round total of 4-under 140 was good enough for a seven-stroke victory over Kentridge’s Ahren Young. The Vikings also captured the team crown.
W.F. West’s Brady Calkins won the Class 2A Southwest District boys tournament, firing a final-round 67 at Three Rivers Golf Course in Kelso to win by five strokes over Hockinson’s Nick Huff.
Courtney Schwan registered 22 kills and 16 digs, and Bellarmine Prep swept South Kitsap, 25-13, 25-22, 25-11, in Narrows League girls volleyball in Port Orchard. If the Lions beat Olympia next Tuesday, they will sweep league play.
Timberline kept its one-game advantage over North Thurston atop the Narrows 3A volleyball standings after its 25-8, 25-13, 25-19 win over Mount Tahoma in Tacoma. Blazers’ junior Riley Podowicz had nine kills, 13 digs and went 9-for-9 serving.
Host Gig Harbor got a goal apiece from Mackenzie Tovey, Julia Sahlin, Ali Oatridge and Aliyah Villa, and the Narrows 4A-leading Tides defeated Timberline, 4-1, in a league crossover girls soccer match. The Blazers got a goal from Katherine Stanton, to end Gig Harbor’s streak of five straight shutouts.
After its 6-3 win over Capital, W.F. West just has to top Centralia on Tuesday to win the EvCo girls soccer title Compiled by The News Tribune staff
