An officer with Metro SWAT fatally shot a 47-year-old man who was pointing a weapon at officials outside his Sumner home Wednesday, according to Sumner police.

The man called 911 just before 3 p.m. and threatened to kill himself, police said. He locked himself in his residence in the 7000 block of 142nd Avenue East, near state Route 410.

The man came out of the residence at 4:19 p.m. pointing the weapon that appeared to be a firearm at police, and did not respond to commands to put it down, City of Sumner spokeswoman Carmen Palmer said.

Metro SWAT is a coalition of local police departments. The officer who opened fire is with the Milton Police Department and has been put on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, per department procedure, Palmer said.

Milton police officials said they would not be releasing information about the officer Wednesday night.
