Duke going bowling?
No matter what happens this weekend, the Blue Devils (6-2) are enjoying the fact they’ll likely go to a bowl. Duke became bowl eligible last week, and the majority of the country booed. Dick Vitale and Shane Battier did a happy dance. Battier even tweeted he would take a fine for missing time with the Miami Heat in order to watch the bowl game.
QB back for Oklahoma St.
Quarterback Wes Lunt will likely take over at Oklahoma State, again, after starter J.W. Walsh was lost for the season last weekend with a knee injury against Iowa State. Walsh, who had replaced Lunt three games ago, was injured early but stayed in and threw for 415 yards in a 31-10 win. Sunday, he showed up on crutches, stunning teammates.
Penn State vs. Ohio State
The Nittany Lions have inexplicably won five games in a row. Urban Meyer has Ohio State at 8-0. The NCAA cringes when it sees these two programs get national exposure of any kind. Because of what he walked into, should Penn State coach Bill O’Brien be coach of the year? A worse situation seems – and hopefully is – unfathomable.
Gesser gets a bye at Idaho
Happy trails, Robb Akey. Akey was fired Sunday after going 1-7 this season and 20-50 since taking over at Idaho in 2007. Akey will be missed by reporters. He always had something zany to spout. Former WSU quarterback Jason Gesser, right, will take over on an interim basis. First up: A bye week for Gesser to get acclimated.
Two big ’uns
No. 12 Georgia at No. 3 Florida; No. 5 Notre Dame at No. 8 Oklahoma
If Bulldogs can upset Florida, it revives their BCS hopes. They’ll be a one-loss team with the tiebreaker over the Gators. A Florida win strengthens its argument to be ahead of Oregon. As for the Irish, their luck may run out. Last two wins by a total of 10 points.
