Traffic Q&A: Wrong-way parking low priority

Question: My problem is people who don’t park facing the correct way on residential streets. I have a few drivers in my neighborhood in North Tacoma that just cannot park the legal way. Is there a city code that enforces parking correctly on the street?

Question: My problem is people who don’t park facing the correct way on residential streets. I have a few drivers in my neighborhood in North Tacoma that just cannot park the legal way.

Is there a city code that enforces parking correctly on the street?

Also, who can I contact to get the police to ticket these wrong-way parkers; you know, the ones who put their left-side tires to the curb. -- Kraig, Tacoma

Answer: Yes, Tacoma does have laws requiring that vehicles be parked facing in the direction of traffic. (The city code that applies is 11.05.010, which is the State of Washington Model Traffic Ordinance.)

According to David Carr, parking services manager in the city’s Public Works Department, parking services officers enforce the law on downtown streets. Elsewhere, it’s up to city cops.

In most cases, wrong-way parking in neighborhoods is not a huge priority for police. The correct way to get attention, Carr says, is to call the police non-emergency line: 253-798-4721.
