FRISCO, Texas — Laurent Courtois and Juan Agudelo scored in stoppage game to lift Chivas USA into a 2-2 tie with FC Dallas on Sunday night in the season finale for both clubs.
Jackson and Fabian Castillo scored for Dallas (9-13-12), which finished sixth in the Western Conference.
“With five minutes left, we thought the game was in our hands and how quickly it turned,” Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said. “If you look at our season, we gave up a lot of goals this year in the latter part of the game and the latter part of the game is when you need to be composed and you have to be sharp.”
Chivas USA (7-18-9) ends the season with a franchise-record winless streak of 14 games. It was outscored 37-10 during its 0-10-4 finish, leaving it last in the Western Conference.
Courtois scored his first goal of the season in the 90th minute to trim FC Dallas’ lead to 2-1. Courtois, who entered in the 80th minute, received a short pass from Ben Zemanski and his soft chip shot from 15 yards out slipped past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman just inside the left post.
Then, moments after Castillo was denied by goalkeeper Tim Melia, Chivas USA completed the comeback when Agudelo scored in the 94th minute. Courtois fed a cross from the left side of the penalty area into the middle, where Agudelo re-directed the ball past Hartman for his third goal of the year.
“It was a pretty crazy ending, but it was satisfying,” Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser said. “They score two goals and we go down, and you figure, here we are at the end of the season and you could easily fold up your tents. I’m just proud of them, they fought down to the last second of the season.”
Jackson, who returned to the lineup after missing the previous two games with an ankle injury, put FC Dallas in front with his fourth goal in the 73rd minute. Castillo tacked on his sixth goal in the 80th minute.
AT CREW 2, TORONTO FC 1: Federico Higuain converted a penalty kick for his second goal of the game, lifting the Columbus Crew to a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC as the Major League Soccer regular season came to a close.
Higuain was taken down by Terry Dunfield in the 62nd minute before scoring his fifth goal. He also scored in the 17th minute.
Both of Higuain’s goals were the results of cutbacks to the left in the penalty area that created space for a shot. On the first, he struck the ball with his left foot to catch goalkeeper Freddy Hall leaning from the right post. He had to dribble around a defender again on the winning play.
“It was a pretty similar play,” said Higuain, who has five goals and seven assists in 13 games since joining the club in August. “I controlled the ball, faked it to shoot, cut it and the defender grabbed me from behind.”
Andrew Wiedeman had Toronto’s goal in the 27th minute. He ran to a long pass from Ryan Johnson and beat goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.
