The good news: Washington State coach Mike Leach will earn a bonus for taking the Cougars to a bowl game this season.

The bad news: The Cougars are 2-6 and have to win their four remaining games to become bowl eligible.

Leach can earn a $75,000 bonus for taking the Cougars to a low-level bowl after details of his five-year contract were released following a public records request.

Leach can also earn $25,000 for winning the Apple Cup against Washington on Nov. 23.

He makes a $2 million base salary and $250,000 in other income.

But according to his contract, he also has use of an 18-person luxury suite at Martin Stadium, use of donated vehicles, first-class upgrades when traveling and travel expenses for his wife and two other people.

ALZHEIMER’S BATTLE

Darrell Royal, who coached the Texas Longhorns to national championships in 1963 and 1969 and a share of the title in 1970, is battling Alzheimer’s disease.

“He’s in his childhood now,” his wife, Edith, said.

Edith Royal is putting some of the family’s personal memorabilia up for auction Nov. 11, with some of the proceeds to go to the Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease launched earlier this year.

Royal, 88, coached Texas from 1957-1976 and won 11 Southwest Conference titles.

Royal coached the Washington Huskies to a 5-5 record in 1956 before going to Texas.

He recently fell and cracked a vertebra, and he will likely start using a wheelchair full time.

Edith Royal said her husband still flashes the sense of humor that made him popular with alumni and media.

“The other day, he said, ‘Edith, I have to go to Hollis (Okla.). Uncle Otis died.’ I said, “No, Darrell, Uncle Otis didn’t die,’ ” she said. “He said, ‘Well, Uncle Otis will be glad to hear that.’

“You have to see the humor it in it sometimes.”

EXTRA POINTS

Former Penn State assistant coach and convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky was sent to serve his child molestation prison sentence at Greene State Prison in southwestern Pennsylvania that includes most of the state’s death row inmates. Officials said he will be housed in protective custody. … Ohio State and Boston College have scheduled a home-and-home football series for the 2020 (in Columbus) and 2021 seasons. … Minnesota State, Mankato, coach Todd Hoffner, who is accused of making pornographic videos of his children, told a judge that the images merely show a skit that his children came up while in the bathtub and asked him to record, which he did on his cell phone. Social workers found no evidence the couple’s children had been abused, and a search of Hoffner’s home computer found no evidence of child porn.
