The Lakewood Republican issued a statement to constituents today assuring them that he does not have cancer, contrary to rumors but that he has been diagnosed with a precursor to leukemia known as MDS, myelodysplastic syndrome.
Daniel C. Elwell, 25, pulled a knife and verbally threatened two store employees when they confronted him as he left the store, stolen books in hand, according to the Boise Police Department.
A store employee followed Elwell and stayed in contact with responding officers on the phone, informing them of his location, according to the news release.
Police believe Elwell, who they described as transient, intended to return the stolen books for cash.
By all accounts, it was a bad week for the 24-year-old Pierce County Jail inmate. Corrections deputies searched the man’s cell Feb. 22 and discovered he had ripped his mattress and gouged a hole in the wall with a pencil. The next day, deputies found a shank – a homemade knife – made from metal torn from the alarm cover.
Additional law enforcement officers will patrol Pierce County roads starting today in search of drivers texting or talking on their cell phones.
Gig Harbor police officers will place a special emphasis this month on drivers who are actively using cell phones while they drive.
