BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant appeared to tweak his left hamstring early in the second quarter and it took him off the field for most of the night.
Trufant made a tackle, then reached back to grab his leg. He was on the field for one more play, then spent the rest of the half being looked at by trainers on the sideline.
Trufant came out for the second half still in pads. He threw his helmet down and jumped on the stationary bike. He hopped around the sideline and worked on changing direction and backpedaling but did not go back in the game until late in the third quarter. He reappeared just for one series, however.
Coach Steve Sarkisian said he thinks Trufant could be back for next week’s game against Utah and hopes the extra day of rest will help him recover in time.
Washington also lost nose tackle Josh Banks, and Pio Vatuvei filled in.
Cal suffered a significant injury when starting quarterback Zach Maynard was helped off the field after appearing to hurt his knee with 4:01 left in the game. He was replaced by redshirt junior Allan Bridgford. Bridgford was 2-for-7 after taking over during the Bears’ final drive of the night.
BISHOP SANKEY POWERS THROUGH
Bishop Sankey started early and kept going.
Sankey finished with a career-high 189 rushing yards on 29 carries. He had 98 yards and a touchdown at the end of the first quarter. Sankey’s previous career-high was 144 yards against Stanford.
But, all was not well. He fumbled twice before righting himself and scoring the winning touchdown on a 1-yard plunge with 4:11 left in the game.
EXTRA POINTS
Washington’s all-time leading rusher Napoleon Kaufman was at the game. ... Cal receiver Chris Harper, who had to step in for injured Keenan Allen, had a career-high-tying seven catches for a career-high 101 yards. ... The last three Washington/Cal games have been decided in the final minute.
