The rain came down hard for most of the night at Sunset Chev Stadium on Friday.
The Sumner High Spartans never touched the ground.
Riding the high of hosting a Class 2A district playoff game – with its first state-tournament berth in nearly two decades hanging in the balance – Sumner throttled North Mason, 38-13.
Running back Lokahi Kamau scored twice, and Austin Gregg ran for and caught a score for the SPSL 2A champions, whose last state appearance came in 1994 – well before coach Keith Ross arrived.
“We did exactly what we needed to do - we shut down their run game, and we ran the ball,” Ross said. “We ran great, and controlled the game.”
Sumner scored on its first possession – Kamau’s 36-yard touchdown run – and held a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.
North Mason threatened to take the lead late in the quarter, but Bulldogs’ running back Tommy Marsh was stuffed for no gain on fourth and goal from the Spartans’ 1.
After that, Sumner slowly took over the game. DeJon Lynch scored on an 8-yard run. Then came the back-breaker – Chase Torgison’s 72-yard touchdown bomb to Austin Gregg late in the first half that gave the Spartans a 21-0 lead.
North Mason’s triple-option rushing attack was held to 88 yards on the ground.
CLASS 4A DISTRICTS
Arlington 21, at Kentwood 14: Skylor Elgarico piled up 313 yards of total offense, including 202 passing with three touchdowns as the Eagles clinched their first state berth since 2010 by shocking the No. 5 Conquerors at French Field.
The Eagles took a 21-14 lead by driving 64 yards for a touchdown – on Elgarico’s 21-yard pass to Austin Wells – to start the second half.
The SPSL North champions were limited to just 40 yards rushing.
Rogers 14, at Monroe 7: In a tight game throughout, one play – LaGrant Pegram’s 95-yard punt return for a touchdown late in the third quarter – was the difference in the Rams upended the Bearcats.
After the punt glanced off his hands, forcing him to retreat backwards to field the bouncing ball, Pegram dashed to his right, and scooted through the entire Monroe coverage team.
He maneuvered past a few tacklers and scored the game-winning touchdown with 57 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Rogers took a 7-0 lead following a Monroe fumble near midfield in the second quarter. Quarterback Grayson Madland hit Andrew Nelson on an 8-yard touchdown pass.
At Camas 43, South Kitsap 12: The Wolves were held in check – minus-1 yards on the ground, and Papermakers’ quarterback Reilly Hennessey completed 16 of 23 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns as No. 4 Camas easily rolled at home.
CLASS 2A DISTRICTS
At Kingston 40, Washington 37: After blowing a lead in the final two minutes, the Buccaneers went on one final drive – and Colin Stone kicked a 42-yard field goal with five seconds remaining to give Kingston a dramatic victory at North Kitsap Stadium.
Bobby Reece gave Kingston a 37-31 lead on a 2-yard run with six minutes to go. Four minutes later, however, Reece was picked off by Kody Martinez, who returned it 67 yards for a touchdown.
After the Patriots were flagged for a personal-foul penalty, they missed the PAT kick, leaving the game tied at 37-37.
Washington tried an onside kick. Two Patriots’ penalties set up Stone’s game-winning kick.
At Steilacoom 38, North Kitsap 15: The Vikings grabbed a little momentum by scoring with under a minute remaining in the first half.
And the Sentinels took it right back.
Steilacoom perfectly executed a hook-and-ladder play that set up a touchdown on the final play of the first half, and the Sentinels advanced to the state playoffs for a second consecutive year.
Up 14-7, Steilacoom called on quarterback Brendan Raschke to throw a pass to Josh Lewis in the flat. He tossed the ball to Brian Thomas, who rumbled 41 yards deep into North Kitsap territory.
After a North Kitsap penalty, the Sentinels took a 22-7 lead on Raschke’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Grant Reed on the final play – and also getting a two-point conversion.
CLASS 1A DISTRICTS
At King’s 28, Cascade Christian 7: Billy Green, the No. 1 Knights touted quarterback headed to Brigham Young, isn’t usually a runner. But he was Friday in leading King’s to a win – ending the Cougars’ remarkable run of five consecutive appearances in the 1A semifinals or better.
Green rushed for more than 100 yards, rushed for just his fourth
touchdown of the season and even rushed in a two-point conversion all in
a first half that saw King’s go ahead 28-0.
The Knights’ offense was nearly perfect during the first half, racking up over 300 yards and scoring on all but one of its five possessions.
Cascade Christian was held to fewer than 50 rushing yards in the game.
