Lou Millie likes a batch of fried chicken after Bellarmine Prep football games. It is a ritual.
And it sort of fits his persona – hard runner who uses his surprisingly stout frame to bang physical defenders inside.
Well, maybe his teammates will cut him some slack after he rushed for a career-high 208 yards on 17 carries, and scored three touchdowns in the third-ranked Lions’ 45-6 victory over Edmonds-Woodway at Mount Tahoma Stadium on Saturday night.
The Lions (9-1) advance out of the district playoffs and into a Class 4A state first-round matchup against Bothell next weekend in Tacoma.
And Bellarmine Prep’s running game is getting fine-tuned at the right time. It went for 326 yards Saturday.
“It was amazing – definitely the best the offensive line has blocked the whole year,” Millie said.
Millie’s 21-yard touchdown gave the Lions a 14-0 lead with 41/2 minutes to go in the first half. But the lead was not safe enough – Edmonds-Woodway had taken all three first-half drives into Bellarmine Prep territory, only not to score.
The Warriors went three-and-out to start the second half. Then came Millie’s season highlight on the Lions’ first play – an 84-yard touchdown scamper where he outraced the entire Edmonds-Woodway secondary.
Not bad for a guy considered more of a possession running back.
“Yeah, that bugs me,” Millie said. “So it was nice to do that, and show people I can do that.”
The definition of speed tailback, however, was on the other sideline in Desmond Young, who pounded out 152 tough yards on 24 carries, and scored on a 34-yard run late in the third quarter.
The Warriors just needed more big plays – and never got enough of them to keep up with Millie and company.
“It is sad we did not have Isaiah (Flynn) coming back,” Lions quarterback Sefo Liufau said. “But we have not lost a step with Lou at running back.”
