A woman died Monday after she apparently jumped from the 54th Avenue East overpass onto northbound Interstate 5 in Fife, according to Fife police. Officers believe the woman committed suicide, Cmdr. Tim Floyd said.
She jumped about 11:45 a.m. and was conscious after the fall. She was taken to Tacoma General Hospital, where she died from her injuries, Floyd said.
Three lanes of northbound I-5 were blocked for the investigation, causing a traffic backup estimated at 3 miles. The lanes reopened about 12:30 p.m.
A jackknifed semi truck blocked lanes of southbound I-5 during the investigation. That accident was unrelated to the fall, Floyd said.
