The department said Thursday it would hold public meetings this winter on the proposed ban. The move is a response to the outrage that erupted last week after a diver wrestled a giant Pacific octopus onto a West Seattle beach.

The state is creating an advisory panel to develop recommendations for protecting giant Pacific octopus in Puget Sound.
Members are being sought for a octopus advisory group formed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
A series of low tides starting Friday will offer a good opportunity to explore local beaches on Puget Sound as the receding water exposes a variety of marine creatures.

Parking will be limited at a popular beach on the Snake River to prevent a repeat of the trashing of the Illia Dunes that occurred last year.
A weekend crowd of about 3,000 people in late August left behind thousands of pounds of trash at the beach near the Lower Granite Lock and Dam and along nearby roadways.
Starting in May the Illia Dunes parking will be limited to two nearby parking lots and parking will not be allowed on the adjacent Almota Ferry Road, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
