VETERANS DAY WEEKEND EVENTS

Some public Veterans Day observances in the Puget Sound region.

TODAY

11 a.m., State Capitol Rotunda, Olympia.

Thurston County Veterans Council hosts annual event starting with music at 10:30. Visitors are encouraged to bring a cushion for more comfortable seating on the marble stairs.

11 a.m., Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent.

Annual Veterans Day ceremony.

2 p.m., War Memorial Park, Tacoma.

Annual Veterans Day ceremony at the park located at Sixth Avenue and MacArthur Street, near the Narrows Bridge. The 56th Army Band brass ensemble is scheduled to play.

2 p.m., Washington Soldiers Home, Orting.

Annual event features Lt. Col. Patrick Wright of the 191st Infantry Brigade as guest speaker, with music by the Puyallup Community Band.

MONDAY

11 a.m., Evergreen Washelli Cemetery, Seattle.

The cemetery’s 63rd Annual Veterans Day Memorial Celebration will feature U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, who will give remarks on the duty owed to the nation’s veterans. The event is a service of remembrance and will take place at the Doughboy statue at the base of the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

1 p.m., Pioneer Park Pavilion, downtown Puyallup.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Joe Jackson, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in Vietnam, will speak at Puyallup’s annual Veterans Day program. The event includes local groups playing a program of patriotic music and standards, and stories of military service told by veterans. Cadets from local Junior ROTC high schools also will participate.

    Her work in recent years has included creating the annual Time of Remembrance event in West Richland, a memorial ceremony honoring men and women who lost their lives serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, or after returning home.

  • Families in Motion event to celebrate Riverwalk Trail

    Families will have an opportunity to learn all about Trails Uniting Communities and healthy living from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday during the fourth annual Families in Motion Day. The free event will take place at the Goodwill Puyallup parking lot, 1200 4th St. NW.

  • Salmon Summit events Tuesday, Wednesday at Columbia Park

    KENNEWICK -- Thousands of students from around the Mid-Columbia will take over the east end of Columbia Park this week as part of the annual Salmon Summit.

    The event is sponsored by the Benton County Conservation District and organizers are expecting 120 classes to visit the park's east boat launch Tuesday and Wednesday to release salmon the students have raised in their classrooms, according to a release. They'll also participate in various educational activities in the park.

    The boat launch will be closed to the public both days from midnight to 3:30 p.m. The public still will be able to access the park but the road through the east end of the park will be closed from the east boat launch to the veterans memorial between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. Barricades will be placed and there will be someone directing traffic.
