 • Experience the talent of young musicians at these concerts today:

University of Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra will perform “Bohemian Rhapsody” in a free 7:30 p.m. concert. It’s being held at Schneebeck Concert Hall, North 14th Street and Union Avenue, Tacoma. For details, call 253-879-3555 or go online to ugetsound.edu/calendar.

Pacific Lutheran University Symphony Orchestra will perform in an 8 p.m. concert. Head out to Lagerquist Concert Hall, Mary Baker Russell Music Building, 1010 122nd St., Tacoma. Tickets are $8 general admission, $5 senior citizen (55-plus), $3 alumni, and free for 18 and younger. Call the concert information line at 253-535-7787 or go online to plu.edu/~music.

 • Sunday is your only chance to walk through and get a sneak preview of the annual Fantasy Lights display. Kick off the holiday season with a 2.5-mile walk through animated displays at Spanaway Park. The walk, 5-7 p.m., starts at Sprinker Recreation Center, 14824 C St. S., Tacoma. You can preregister for a discount price of $3 per person or $9 for a family of four. The walk is $4 per person and $12 per family of four if purchased Sunday.     Katherine Applegate, winner of the 2013 Newbery Award for children's literature, is a featured speaker at the 10th annual Children's Literature Conference next month at Western Washington University.

    Applegate's "The One and Only Ivan" is about the gorilla that was kept for years at a Tacoma mall. She also is the author of "Home of the Brave," the "Roscoe Riley Rules" series, and the "Animorphs" series - co-written with her husband Michael Grant, who is also a speaker. The award was announced Monday, Jan. 28, by the American Library Association at its midwinter meeting in Seattle.

    Registration is $99 for the conference, which is 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the WWU Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

  • Cutting-edge cellists join forces for out-of-the-box Tacoma concert tonight

    Cello soloist Zoe Keating and the Portland Cello Project perform their first concert together at the Rialto Theater. While most classical composers give cellos little to do, this concert will layer the string instrument's rich, vocal tone and give the instrumentalists dirtied-up bass lines, funky rock rhythms and eerie harmonies.
