Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will sit out Monday's game against the San Francisco 49ers while he is still recovering from a concussion.
Jason Campbell will start in Cutler's place.
Cutler suffered the injury during last week's loss to the Houston Texans when he absorbed a hard hit to the head late in the first half by linebacker Tim Dobbins.
After Cutler stayed in the game and played the rest of the second quarter, Campbell took over under center for the second half. He completed 11-of-19 passes for 94 yards in the 13-6 loss.
"It's a little bit different when you haven't been in there from the beginning of the season," Campbell said. "No one said it's going to be easy, but we got to fight together and play as a unit."
Cutler has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards with 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions through nine game this season.
Campbell spent last season with the Oakland Raiders, starting six games and throwing for 1,170 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 60.6 percent of his passes. He suffered a broken collarbone with the Raiders off to a 4-2 start and sat out most of the remainder of the season after the club acquired Carson Palmer in a trade with Cincinnati.
The Bears currently sit in first place of the NFC North with a 7-2 record and will try to avoid a repeat of last season's 1-5 swoon over the last six weeks of the season, which included five straight losses after Cutler went down with a thumb injury.
"When you look at what happened to the Bears last year, that's the reason (Campbell's) here," said wide receiver Brandon Marshall on Friday. "We're fortunate to have a starting quarterback as a backup."
Campbell, selected with the 25th overall pick of the 2005 draft by the Washington Redskins, has thrown for 14,511 yards, 74 touchdowns and 50 interceptions with a 60.8 completion percentage while starting 70 of 75 career games with the Redskins and Raiders. He has a 31-39 record as a starter.
