Sarah St. Hilaire, a Washington State University Tri-Cities intern, grew up steeped in Hanford history.
Her grandfather worked on the Manhattan Project and her mother was born in 1945 in Richland, then newly taken over by the federal government.
But she wondered why there was not more publicly available history on the early years of the nuclear reservation -- when settlers were forced off their land to make way for a secret World War II project and a construction camp for 50,000 people sprang up in the desert.
Particles on the Wall, a multidisciplinary art exhibit that examines how nuclear technology has affected humanity, opens Tuesday with a reception starting at 6 p.m. at Washington State University Tri-Cities.
The exhibit blends visual art, poems and science with history and memorabilia to address issues of radioactive contamination, nuclear weapons and technology in Washington, and the role of nuclear technology in southeastern Washington.
The exhibit continues through April 4 in the Consolidated Information Center, 2770 Crimson Way, Richland.
