The Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence starts its holiday fundraiser today. Paper doves can be purchased for $1 at Jacksons Food Stores, with proceeds going to the coalition to prevent domestic and dating violence via community awareness.

    FERNDALE - Ten Whatcom County employers will be honored Thursday, Jan. 24, for their efforts to respond to and support victims of domestic violence in the workplace.

    The 10 a.m. ceremony at the Ferndale Police Department is part of an initiative by the Bellingham-Whatcom County Commission Against Domestic Violence to expand the community's response to victims of domestic violence.     UPDATE as 5:06 p.m. Officers determined when they arrived at the scene that the 53-year-old man had committed domestic violence against his wife, according to police. She escaped the home before police arrived, and gave police an account that gave officers probable cause to arrest her husband for investigation of domestic violence, Capt. Scott Engle said. The suspect refused to exit the mobile home and would not communicate with officers, Engle said. Metro SWAT went into the home and took the man into custody without incident, according to police.

  • Domestic violence advocates needed

    Domestic Violence Services of Benton & Franklin Counties is offering volunteer advocacy training for several days starting Thursday.

    The training will provide a general understanding of domestic violence issues and cover topics including counseling, working with kids, answering crisis calls and legal advocacy, said a news release.

    The training is required as part of the process of becoming a volunteer. Domestic Violence Services volunteers help with everything from shelter activities to answering the 24-hour crisis line.
