Washington cornerback, and Wilson High grad, Desmond Trufant was on the all-conference first team and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins was on the second team when Pacific-12 Conference awards were announced Monday.
Trufant has 34 tackles, a sack and an interception plus eight pass breakups in his senior season. His interception against Stanford sealed the victory for the Huskies.
Seferian-Jenkins broke several Washington tight end records this season. He has 63 catches for 791 yards and six touchdowns.
Stanford’s Zach Ertz, a fellow finalist for the John Mackey Award signifying the best tight end in the country, was named the All-Pac-12 first-team tight end. His numbers are almost identical to Seferian-Jenkins’: 63 catches, 818 yards and six touchdowns.
Foss High grad Scott Crichton, a defensive end at Oregon State, was named to the first-team defense.
USC wide receiver Marqise Lee was named the offensive player of the year. Arizona State defensive tackle Will Sutton was named the defensive player of the year. Stanford’s David Shaw was voted coach of the year.
NO SHORTCUT FOR EMBREE
A choked-up Jon Embree suggested that the only way he could have turned around the University of Colorado’s flailing football program in his two seasons as head coach was to take shortcuts in the classroom and on the recruiting trail.
“If you just hire the next guy and say you’ve got two years, keep your fingers crossed,” Embree said at his farewell news conference a day after being fired.
Athletic director Mike Bohn responded: “Shortcuts are not going to be an answer and we’re not going to hire a coach that expects to use shortcuts.”
