The San Diego Chargers placed safety Atari Bigby on injured reserve Tuesday after he hurt his groin during the team's loss to the Baltimore Ravens over the weekend.
Bigby sustained the injury during the first half of Sunday's 16-13 overtime setback. The seven-year veteran had started each of San Diego's first 11 games at strong safety this season and ranked second on the team with 68 tackles.
The 31-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Chargers in March after spending the 2011 campaign with Seattle. Bigby entered the league with Green Bay in 2005 and compiled 10 interceptions while making 33 starts over the course of five seasons with the Packers.
To fill the roster spot, the Chargers re-signed linebacker Bront Bird.
Bird made the Chargers as an undrafted rookie in 2011 and appeared in nine games as primarily a special teamer. The Texas Tech product was waived by the team during final roster cuts in September.
