Staff and students at Tacoma’s Lister Elementary School were saddened to learn of the death of their former principal, Rafael “Ray” Maltos, this fall.

But today they will gather to celebrate his life in a most appropriate way.

They’re hosting a memorial tailgate party for a man known not only as a dedicated educator, but as a true Husky fan. The Lincoln High School cheer team and Lincoln’s drum line will provide entertainment, while sponsors will provide refreshments. The party is scheduled for noon-2 p.m. at the school, 2106 E. 44th St.

Current and former Lister kids, parents, staff and friends are invited to attend – and to wear purple and gold in honor of Maltos’ alma mater, or their favorite football colors.

Maltos began his teaching career in 1976 in Sunnyside. He became principal at Lister in 2004, a job he held until his retirement in June.

Maltos died Oct. 6 after a six-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 61.
