Open-air ice skating and a holiday tree lot will return to downtown Tacoma this weekend, staying through the end of the holiday season.
The Two Five Trees lot will open in Tollefson Plaza, between Pacific Avenue and Commerce Street. Backing and sponsorship comes from Local Life, which promotes Tacoma neighborhoods and community spirit.
Also returning is a “Bavarian Whoville” mural designed by local artist Jeremy Gregory. A new player is the Northwest Leadership Foundation. Staffers from the group will help customers pick trees and offer community-service opportunities for at-risk teens.
People who buy a tree between noon and 6 p.m. can get a free ride home (with their tree), courtesy of Tacoma’s downtown Zipcars. The company, a worldwide service recently arrived in Tacoma, allows members access to cars at an hourly or daily rate — but the rides will be free at today’s event.
