The Starbucks Metal Card will be available at the shopping website Gilt.com starting at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Friday, until the supply of 5,000 cards is sold out. Starbucks is getting all kinds of fancy, first with its $7 cup of coffee, and now with its limited edition Metal Card that includes gold level membership for the Starbucks rewards program. Rewards program gold membership means a free birthday drink and a free drink or food item after the purchase of 12 drinks.

Without a Metal Card (which is refillable), Starbucks customers have to make 30 transactions within a year to achieve gold membership. A presale begins today for current rewards program members.

Use the card toward a cup of the Costa Rica Finca Palmilera, which the company began selling last month — at $7 (for a grande size), its most expensive coffee ever.

When Dave Harding was hired as director of the Whatcom Family YMCA, there was talk of moving the Y from downtown to the outskirts of Bellingham, in part because it occupied, in the words of a longtime board member, an "old, dilapidated, crummy-looking building."

    That was 25 years ago.

Today, the YMCA is still downtown, but the building has been remodeled inside and out. There are more amenities, including a climbing wall; more programs, including Y-run child care at numerous sites in the county; and there's room for growth, because the Y has purchased several nearby buildings and a parking lot.
